Welcome to iDay

June 29, 2007

iDay — that’s how this day’s been called in preparation for what is perhaps the biggest cell phone launch in consumer history.

As for the iPhone — whether you’re out camping, stopping by a store later, going to buy it online, or just aren’t interested in it — there’s no escaping from the media frenzy. Here are some interesting links to prepare yourself, including some that were written here at Mac Recon.

Apple’s own iPhone page. Hope your keyboard is drool-proof.

The Consumerist teaches you six ways on how to cancel your cell service. This is in case the iPhone rush got ahold of you, and want to leave your cell provider for AT&T. Exclusivity only hurts consumers in the end.

David Pogue has done a great video review of the iPhone. A must-watch because of the entertainment only Pogue can offer.

Valleywag’s iPhone scorecard. Based on four reviews already out for the iPhone.

The Onion has an interesting take on the iPhone. I think that with the features they mention, the $600 price tag looks better. Oh, wait…

Our take on why you should wait for the new iPod, not the iPhone. Just not counting The Beatles factor mentioned back then.

MacApper claims to have heard that real third party apps will come soon to the iPhone. After Steve’s introduction to Web 2.0 apps, it all looks like wishful thinking.

We recently talked of five important features missing from the iPhone. Not counting 3G support.

There’s already a website dedicated to iPhone apps. A must-visit for future iPhone owners. That is, until here at Mac Recon a software list is made for the iPhone, much like it was done for the Mac.

Christmas came early for Apple employees, as Steve is gifting most of them an iPhone. Should we now call him Santa Jobs?

We talked about three possible devices that Apple may create with the iPhone’s technology. Again, that’s just wishful thinking. :-D
UPDATE: Did AT&T’s EDGE network get a speed boost because of the iPhone’s imminent launch? If that’s true, the iPhone’s going to be awesome — no matter where (within AT&T’s coverage, of course).

If I didn’t have to work overtime tonight, I’d go find a line to stand in just to say
“I was there”. I won’t be buying an iPhone until it supports 3G.

I also have to do a bunch of stuff today, so I won’t be able to be in line. I still have high hopes of grabbing one via the online Apple Store when they go live at night, though. And yes, I think it’s a good buy for me since it’ll replace my prehistoric cell phone and my badly-beaten iPod (which is barely alive!).

If all goes well, I guess I’ll have some pics and something to talk about for next week.
