Who would’ve thought that the iPhone was destined to become a bigger than expected from when it was announced back in January? That’s the hype machine at work around the internet, and it did well. So much that it helped Apple achieve the million units sold in about three months and a successful spin-off (the iPod touch). But something that has probably drawn more attention to the iPhone than anything else was what the hackers have been adding to the platform — whether it was the cell phone unlock or adding better apps for the users to enjoy. Most importantly, Apple has stuck its foot in an effort to stop everything.
How did it get to this point? It’s quite simple — Apple is filling out the contractual obligations with its business partner. In this case, it turned out to be AT&T — ironic, especially since Steve Jobs himself was an AT&T hacker back in his college days. But nobody knows for sure what the whole deal is — except that things would be going a lot smoother if Apple didn’t limit every developer into creating the nowhere-as-good web apps for the iPhone. It’s amazing that Apple cannot reach a compromise with the iPhone devs, especially since it’s turning out to be one of the pivotal points of this gadget’s short history. One YouTube user had pretty much the best way to sum it up:
