Haven’t you ever wished that you could tag every last bit of data that you have in your Mac, just like you could tag any object in real life? Lucky you, because Punakea does that very same job in a very easy and efficient manner. This app features a very simple user interface — inviting anyone to use it — and a powerful tag search engine (which can complement Spotlight) to look anything you’ve tagged — and quite fast, at that.
The interface is straightforward — you just drop whatever you desire to tag into Punakea’s window, and you’ll be prompted to write up as many tags as you want the item to include. You can even drag multiple items at once, and choose tags for each one of them.

Once everything’s been tagged, you’ll be able to search for your item by clicking on these tags (which appear in a nice cloud view, by the way) — thus, displaying whatever’s been linked with it. As you click on them, you can keep clicking whatever other tags are related to it in order to narrow your search.
Punakea works pretty much like any other tagging system, but everything’s now within your Mac. Another useful feature is that you can drag these tags into your desktop, and it automatically creates a smart folder destined to contain everything that’s been assigned to that particular tag.
This is one app that has become indispensable to me in a normal day’s work, even though I’ve just begun to use it. And I can’t even begin to imagine how they’ll improve it, since it’s barely in beta. In a few words, Punakea is great — and a free.
