Software Review :: Picturesque

With many image editors available for the Mac right now, do we really need another one? If we’re talking about Picturesque, then yes. This app is capable of “beautifying” images with ease. It has been built from the ground-up with the idea of making any image more appealing to be displayed on the web. In the end, Picturesque is a simple drag-and-drop editor that gets its job done. Keep on reading to learn more.

Design. For the most part, it consists of two windows: the one where you drag the desired image to edit, and the inspector for editing the image — which appears once an image has been added. Its interface is sleek and easy to understand, so you’ll have no problems here.

Functionality. This is no Photoshop — but it’s perfect for adding that extra “oomph” to any image, which is sure to catch some eyes. It has the following features: background (which can be saved to the final image if desired), reflection, shadow, glow, rounded corners, edge stroking, fading, and even resizing. All images contained within this post have been edited with Picturesque.

Limitations. If I had to pick at something, I’d say that it would’ve been nice to add the option to retouch some images within the app, like in iPhoto. But since the app’s main purpose is to beautify (hence the name), it’s no big deal. And it even includes some Automator workflows for maximizing efficiency, so it’s damn-near perfect at what it does.

Final thoughts. I can say with confidence that Picturesque may replace Photoshop for many people who maintain websites — especially bloggers. It may even be appealing for people who want to showcase some spectacular photos for any occasion. Picturesque is priced fairly at $19.50, and is highly recommended thanks to its simplicity.

    It does look pretty cool, but wow. To say it will replace photoshop is saying a lot.

    Sorry about the confusion, Travis. What I meant is that for those of us that have to quickly edit images for a website, this app saves me a lot of time by using it instead of Photoshop. I still get the odd job where I must forcefully use Photoshop — but for most posts, I guess bloggers will be happy with it.

    Hope that clears it up.
