Software Review :: iShowU

Have you ever wanted to take some video of something on your Mac’s screen, whether it’s for work, personal use, or just for fun? There are multiple apps out there that do the job, but iShowU is one of the most versatile — and fairly-priced — on-screen video capture apps available today for the Mac. Check out the full review after the jump.

When you open iShowU for the first time, you have the option for the program to automatically add some useful capture presets. That’s pretty good, so that you can immediately start using it without messing around with its settings.

iShowU has all the necessary options for making a top-notch capture — such as the ability to set the capture size, if the capture follows your mouse, microphone input, system audio input, and adjustable quality/encoding settings.

As a test, I was able to successfully capture a 5-minute clip of a work session with no problems, whatsoever. As a tougher test, I was able to capture a few minutes of full-screen gaming — only with some moments of slow down when using high-settings graphics. To be honest, I thought it wouldn’t be able to handle that last test. Impressive.

And if you don’t like the default presets in the app, as mentioned, you can always add and save your own for future use.

The only real drawback is that it doesn’t offer any screenshot capture options. I know that Mac OS has a built-in option for that, but it would’ve been nice to have the it included in the app — perhaps with some clipboard functionality.

But overall, iShowU is the best video capture app I’ve used so far. You should definitely check it out if you’re looking to record some on-screen video.

    Sorry, I do not know any similar apps for Windows — but I’m sure there must be. Try looking for one at VersionTracker.com
