Software Review :: FlickrExport for iPhoto

iPhoto is a darn good app for managing your digital memories. But as for sharing them? Almost as good — the most notable exception being integration with Flickr, and not just iWeb. Having previously talked about it as a useful Flickr tool, here’s a deeper look at FlickrExport, a fantastic iPhoto plugin — and whether it’s worth £12 of your of hard-earned money.

Design. As a plugin, it blends perfectly with iPhoto. Just go to the File tab in the menu bar, and click the Export option. There you’ll be greeted by the plugin once you click in the Flickr tab. It certainly looks like it’s been there all along — and the interface is pretty straight-forward.

Functionality. It’s perfect, meaning, as the means of directly uploading your memories from within iPhoto. All it does is detect the selected photo(s), and displays them in order to edit their info before initiating the upload. Title, description, tags, privacy, destination, scaling… it has all the necessary aspects in order to maximize their Flickr status. The nice bonuses are that it automatically detects the existing tags within your account, and displays them for easy selection — and even the titles and descriptions can be saved back into iPhoto. Then, of course, it’s really that easy to manage and upload a large batch of photos with this plugin — just watch out for your remaining Flickr bandwidth!

Final thoughts. This is one excellent plugin that is sure to please all Flickr users with an iPhoto library. In fact, with the rising popularity of Flickr, it’s a wonder that iPhoto doesn’t already have this option — maybe because iWeb is feeling a bit of envy. But take a close look and read £12 price tag, which may make many think about this purchase. But is direct Flickr uploading a must for you? If so, it’s a no-brainer. If unsure, try out the demo first.
