CSSEdit 2 is, like the name suggests, a CSS editor — an app customizing a website’s look. The website’s look is up to the person that’s using it, but it can deliver astounding results.
This app is geared towards any kind of person that’s interested in designing websites. And I mean any kind of person, because it retains all the features a pro would want — yet, it’s simple enough to the point that it’s very inviting even for beginners.
But it certainly beats designing a website’s appearance using the plain ol’ coding sessions. CSSEdit 2 is super fast and much more reliable. Not to mention that it has a fantastic user interface that is able to autodetect CSS.
You can either start a new CSS file, open an existing one, or — better yet — import one from the web. But don’t just steal it! As the app’s site says: learn from the pros. And when you open the CSS file, it is applied in real time to a target website via the preview window. That is simply awesome. This allows for very efficient work — online and off — without compromising the actual website.
And it has many great features, my favorite for the moment being Milestones — which are previously saved sets of your work. That way if you mess it up, just click on the desired Milestone and your work will return just as it was saved back there. This feature does a great job in inviting you to be creative without the worries of making a fatal mistake, and having to deal with multiple copies of the same file.
My adventure with CSSEdit 2 was an unbelievable one — I cannot believe I actually made websites (this modified WordPress theme included) using long sessions of coding. As an example, I made some changes I wanted to do for quite some time to this website… in under 2 minutes! It would’ve taken me (an average coder) at the very least 8 minutes to do the same manually.
My only complaint is that it should have included support for various browsers from different operating systems, without actually having them on the same computer. That way, you would’ve known if your work applies the same to all. But the app is still damn-near perfect.
CSSEdit 2 is a real time saver, and it’s a fine piece of software for any web designer — whether you’re a pro or not.
