Soaring through mails with Mailplane

I can’t believe that Gmail is more than able to handle my big mail inbox consisting of various domain accounts. That’s right, all Mac Recon mail is now being handled through Google’s webmail servcie — and rather efficiently, at that. But the real kicker is Mailplane, a stand-alone app with the sole purpose of turning your webmail account into a desktop mail client.

Design. Mailplane transforms your Gmail inbox into an excellent desktop mail client. It has its own toolbar that works excellent with Gmail, for example. Not to mention that it looks great.

Functionality. Here you’ll find mostly everything you’d want from your mail client, although Gmail only supports POP access for a maximum of five accounts — other Gmail inboxes are not supported (*big WHY pointed towards Google*). And these limitations, are most on Google’s side of the field — there and then you notice it doesn’t stop being a webmail service.

Random thoughts. Still, Mailplane is working for me like a dream — I have managed to totally replace Mail from my work screen with it. All of Mac Recon’s mail accounts are working perfectly through Gmail now, only to be enhanced with Mailplane. This is a big bonus for me, since some network limitations on campus somehow mess with Mail’s performance — not to mention access from any computer. And Gmail’s search is infinitely superior to Mail’s!

Beta. Even though it’s in beta, I haven’t encountered any bugs of any kind. The only thing missing is support for multiple windows connected to different Gmail inboxes — but the developer tells me that it’s coming. The final release date or price haven’t been announced — but you can request a beta through the app’s website.
