Now that AppleInsider is claiming that the Mac mini will most likely go the way of the G4 Cube, I think the appropriate question to be asked is “Should I get one now?”. After all, it’s no secret that the G4 Cube was one of Steve Job’s favorites (on which the mini is based) and that sales weren’t disappointing this time. In fact, there’s a big community of Mac mini lovers out there. To the point…

Should I get one now? Why not? It’s a great, and relatively inexpensive Mac. If not for work, a media center setup is ideal for the mini (how-to) — it’s an even better buy than an Apple TV and well worth the $600 price tag. And if they’re indeed discontinued, you’ll end up owning a great piece of Apple history and media center, at the very least.
Should I wait? If they’re not discontinued, it doesn’t stop it from being a great Mac. But if they are, there’s always eBay.
Random thoughts from a man with a dark past. I still remember that day I never got one of those G4 Cubes… At least I have my 12″ PowerBook to comfort me.
