Regarding the next iPod

August 24, 2007

There’s been more than the usual chatter this month regarding the next iPod. Could it be that now, as the iPhone rush is slowing down, Apple has a surprise for us? More specifically, as early as September? Let’s take a look at the history chart, along with all the chatter intercepted from the internet.

It all started after the current iPod’s launch, which was more than two years ago. Shortly after the launch Apple stated that this wasn’t the real video iPod. That thought was what made fans across the globe go crazy with some interesting ideas.

It didn’t help the creative fans to calm down once some touch-screen patents surfaced from Apple. This spurred tons of mockups and fakes that flooded the web, all of which were now a unified idea in the minds of the fans: a wide, all touch-screen iPod. Quite similar to what some of us now have in our pockets: the iPhone.

Most of us didn’t see it coming, but Apple actually has been neglecting the next-gen iPod idea for two years in order for us to have the iPhone in our pockets before it. And since the iPhone was everything the fans were expecting for the next iPod, it was assumed that the design would remain about the same — except for the cell phone part.

A couple of interface videos were leaked on the internet, which were claimed to be the next iPod’s UI. The problem? Even though the UI seemed much more advanced, the display was still full-screen. And since Apple legal asked for those videos to be removed, that made some fans think that Apple may indeed be improving on the iPod — but not as much for it to compete with the iPhone. After all, Apple’s biggest competition is itself.

In the past few days, a mysterious picture popped up on the internet — one showing pastel-colored iPods with a bigger full-screen (or perhaps they’re just less tall). These were claimed to be the next-gen iPod nanos, but due to the mentioned videos, evidence is still inconclusive (and who really trusts everything on the internet?). Oh, and Apple legal also asked for the picture to be removed, which raises the question if they were true even higher.

Reports still continue to pop up regarding a September announcement, where new iPods will definitely be shown. Since September looks like the date at which Apple normally announces the new iPods, it seems credible that we’ll see new ones — even if they’re not as the “leaks” have showed us. Another strong point to support a September announcement is that Steve Jobs will be present at that month’s Apple Expo in Paris — after a two-year absence — to present new products.

iPods can evolve and become better, but seriously, it’s strength was in it’s great integration with iTunes.

If Apple doesn’t get the European iTunes stores to sell videos and movies, then all this functionality is pretty much worthless. One reason I’m still sticking with my 3G iPod.
