From a personal experience: has anyone noticed how your Mac is sucking on hard drive space for no apparent reason? Well, I noticed. It all started when I left the Mac turned on for more than a week consecutively without restarting it — or even letting it sleep. I had at least ten more gigs left in the internal hard drive, but when I noticed this peculiar behavior at first, it only showed 247MB!
I panicked. Would this be the end of the constantly-growing iTunes collection within the Mac? But I remembered the wise words a major Mac geek once told me: “If anything goes wrong with a Mac, just try restarting it. Chances are that it will automatically be fixed.” I heeded his words and did it. Did it work?
Yes, it did. My Mac’s back at slowly-depleting 10.63 gigs. Why did it work? In my particular case, I guess the virtual memory is to blame because of the long-running processes. But I don’t really know. The point is a restart fixed it, just like it has fixed similar problems I’ve had in the past.
Why? Let’s say little Mac fairies come together with Unix fairies and make great magic when they are together. Thanks to them, a simple restart will let the machine fix itself.
But if a Mac is given proper maintenance with an app like MainMenu, I don’t see why it should be in a frequent, troublesome state.
Has anyone noticed the magical power of restarting?
