Panic’s Coda: Is it worth it?

After this past Sunday’s “exclusive review” controversy from MacApper, Panic officially unveiled their newest app — Coda — this past Monday. While the MacApper review couldn’t have been timed for a worse time, it still generated a lot of hype. And when an app generates that hype, when it’s oozing with quality, and seems so complete, you can expect a big punch-line — in this case it was $79.99 price tag ($69.99 for Transmit 3 owners). Keep on reading for what’s the deal on the app.

Create Websites. Coda does a superb job at creating and editing various websites — the text editing being responsive and easy to work with. It also allows you to start clacking at these keys in various supported web languages, as shown in the screen below. This looks like a serious hit for anyone who uses apps such as TextMate for website creation.

Many features. Within Coda, you have CSS edition that’s similar to that seen in CSSEdit (check out the past review for more info). It also has the Transmit FTP engine built-in for speedy uploading, web preview for the site you’re working on, Server terminal, and even The Web Programmer’s Desk Reference book built-in.

Share. Yes, you can share, thanks to the Subetha engine — that way, you can simultaneously work with a partner through the web.

One Interface. All these features are found in a single window — all sections in each of their respective tabs. This fact alone will boost productivity, as you won’t need to be changing apps for web design, anymore.

$79.99 is a good deal, then? Because of the features that are built into this one, Coda is clearly a winner. While the price may seem a bit high, it’s actually cheaper than getting different apps for doing what Coda does in one interface. So if you’re a web designer, this one’s a no-brainer — just get it before the price goes up! And as a curious fact, I found that “Coda” is a Spanish idiom for “cheap” — in a Scrooge kind of way. Curious, since the price tag will definitely make many feel that way.

Notice: All was written by using the free trial available. I don’t think I’ll be getting the app since I’m not a pro web developer.
