Perhaps you’ve thought of making your own customized icons for giving your desktop a unique look, but think that you cannot achieve it since you’re not a graphics designer? Actually, it’s all very easy on the Mac. You can do it by yourself or with the help of some great software available.

Easy. Just copy the desired image (Cmmd+C). Now select the desired item to apply the image to, and press Cmmd+I to get its info. Highlight the icon in the Get Info window that just popped up, and paste the icon (Cmmd+V). Now enjoy your newly customized icon!

FastIcns. I was perplexed when I opened the app for the first time, because a 3D cube that’s in constant rotation greeted me. To make your own icon, what you have to do is drag the desired image to be converted into the cube, where it’ll be displayed on all sides as the icon it will become. To save the icon, just double click the cube and save it. That’s all there is to FastIcns — an app that actually creates a .icns file. Although sometimes it may not produce the best results with transparency…

The not-a-minute-hack way. If you didn’t catch it, MacApper has a nice guide in how to make pixel-perfect icons.
