Apple’s Mighty Mouse may be a nice fit for Mac users — but it truly craves for a more palm-friendly design and better functionality. What choices are out there? The Logitech MX Revolution is one that comes to mind, especially since it’s being touted as “the world’s most advanced mouse”. But is it really that good? Here’s the review.

Design. Speaking of palm-friendly, the MX Revolution is many times more comfortable than a Mighty Mouse. It’s almost as if our hands were designed for use with this mouse instead of the other way around. The weight may be a tad heavier, but still within the average levels. Then you just look at it — you notice how sleek it is. And within that design you find 7 buttons, a scroll-wheel, and a thumb-wheel. Pretty good so far. Oh, and you get to dock it in its elegant charge station, too.

Functionality. The first thing you’re going to have to do is head over to Logitech’s website and download the latest version of the Logitech Control Center for the Mac — the included install CD is for Windows only. Once that’s set, just connect the tiny USB receiver (it’s not Bluetooth), charge the mouse in its station, and you’re free to use it. I didn’t like the default configuration, so when I headed over to change it at the System Preferences, I noticed that everything’s very customizable — except for the thumb-wheel, which is locked for either zooming or app switching only. Then again, I successfully configured everything else to my liking — including the search button, which now opens Quicksilver. Now I’m working more efficiently with this mouse than the previous one — it’s an exceptional laser mouse.
Separating this mouse from the rest. Besides over what’s mentioned above, the scroll wheel has a couple of more nifty features: it can scroll horizontally when tilted to the sides. And if you click on it, you can change the vertical scrolling mode. What’s that? Well, it has the regular click-by-click scrolling from other mice, but it also has the free-spin mode. That last mode eliminates all friction for extremely fast scrolling with the flick of a finger — perfect for long documents. It’s charging station will ensure that the mouse is always juiced up for when in use. And the battery itself is amazing — it has lasted me for more than whole day’s work.

Final thoughts. If I had to find some defects for the mouse, I’d have to say is its price tag of $99.99, which might be expensive for some. But if you need one of the best mice on the market right now, you can’t go wrong with this one.

Logitech’s MX Revolution is available directly from Logitech, or through various online/retail resellers.
