Hands-on :: Things

Things is a new GTD app from CulturedCode, who are responsible for the Xyle scope application that was also well-received here in Mac Recon. Like Xyle scope, Things has a fantastic interface that really packs more than it appears at a glance. To get started with Things, just type in a task to do, add tags for categorization, perhaps a comment or two, and a due date. You can also set the task’s priority for things that need your immediate attention. The one feature that makes this one a winner is its own quick entry window (bottom-most image in this post) that can be summoned via a programmed hotkey, and can pop up in virtually any app within OS X. That way you can write down things on the fly without leaving the application that you’re currently working in.

I’ve been using the free preview of Things for some time, and now I cannot imagine life without it. Things is a surprisingly simple GTD app, yet, has an architecture that can be used to keep every aspect of one’s life in check. And let’s remember that this is the preview version — so it can be assumed that the final version will rock (or more accurately, organize) many people’s lives in the near future.

As soon as Things gets its 1.0 release, we’ll take a better look at it. In the meanwhile, you can learn more about Things by watching its screencast, or downloading the preview version from the app’s website.
