HandBrake VS MacTheRipper
August 21, 2007
There’s some slight confusion when some users ask how it’s the best way to rip their DVD collection on the Mac. When asked, there’s mainly two apps that pop to their minds immediately: HandBrake and MacTheRipper. Each is a different ripping app from the other, so here’s a quick intro to each app. Just remember: be sure you understand all the legal aspects of DVD ripping before doing so.

HandBrake.
HandBrake will take your DVD and rip your feature presentation in a wide variety of video formats — including presets that are compatible with popular media devices for quick conversion. Here the resulting file is a single video one that varies in size according to the quality selected.
MacTheRipper.
MacTheRipper, in comparison, creates a duplicate of your DVD in your hard drive, which can be played like a regular DVD in Apple’s DVD Player and other compatible apps. The resulting file is actually a folder comprised of various items — just like the original DVD. Here it’s tough to get it converted to more mainstream formats for compatible media devices, but the app is perfect for when wanting to duplicate DVDs in their entirety.
Last words.
As mentioned, these are two very different apps. But as both apps are free, it doesn’t hurt to have both of them in your Mac. There you could opt to put HandBrake to good use by converting movies into files that are compatible for your iPhone, or then create a digital DVD library in your (huge) hard drive by ripping them with MacTheRipper.

I am not too familiar with Mac the Ripper but HandBrake is a great app. The new effects for 0.9.0 are way slick and the performance has come a long way from when I first started using it.
