Enhance the iTunes experience

iTunes is a great user experience — both on Macs and PCs. And yet, that experience can be enhanced even more thanks to the vast amount of iTunes companion apps that are available. Here are seven to start you off — also make sure to share your favorite iTunes companion in the comments!

The Filter. This app is a great companion for iTunes. With a touch of a button, The Filter is able to make a great playlist depending on what you want to base it off — anything from a song up to a random style. Every now and then its advanced algorithm may produce wacky results (why did it mix soft rock with rap?), but you can tinker with the resulting playlist until you’re satisfied with it.

CoverSutra. A great lil’ menu/window controller application for iTunes. It can do everything from setting keys to controlling iTunes’ playback — up to elegantly displaying the current song in a transparent window, or just a quick flash when the song changes. A free alternative to this one is GimmeSomeTune.

Tangerine! Another app that creates great playlists for you, but this one bases everything mostly from the songs’ BPM — granting upbeat, lowbeat, or something in between playlists.

Awaken. This much-mentioned music alarm clock is simply the best available for the Mac. Its free competitor is Aurora.

DeskTunes. As its name implies, it shows the current song’s info directly on your desktop.

MyTunesRSS. Share your tunes (and even videos!) to various internet-enabled devices through your network — or the internet!

AutoRate. Automatically rates all of your songs using a simple algorithm based on how frequently you play/skip that specific song.

Don’t forget Synergy, the iTunes controller.

Synergy is great! But if you don’t mind spending a bit more, CoverSutra can get the job done, and has other extra features.
