Steve Jobs just let the word out that the AppleTV can now have a 160gig hard drive as a build-to-order option — all for $400. That’s a sweet deal if you consider the wimpy 40gig AppleTV sells at $300, and the cheapest 160gig hard drive is $100 (at NewEgg). Now that the AppleTV has had its biggest drawback fixed — the storage space — one must think the following: $400 is not that far from a Mac mini’s price point… and it can do far more stuff when used as a TV computer.
But just as that, all users can rest easily, knowing that the dev team at Apple isn’t just twiddling their thumbs and leaving the AppleTV alone — because they just announced that a YouTube player for the AppleTV. Looks like all this Apple-Google friendliness is paying off.
Then again, who needs this stuff when more and more homebrew content is appearing for the AppleTV? In fact, there’s even an (unofficial) AppleTV SDK now available for the Mac.
Everything considered, the AppleTV just got a whole lot more appealing. And with the proper hacking, it will end up something better than the much-mentioned Mac-mini-as-a-media-center combo.
In other news, Microsoft’s Surface will be too expensive to find a place in your living room next to your AppleTV. Yet, if implemented correctly, will do wonders at public places.
