AppleTV: a hacker’s dream

Continuing with the Apple TV mania!

Back before this little box came out, I pointed out that it would become a hacker’s dream. And why not? It’s a really watered-down Mac mini — a $300-dollar computer beneath a fancy media center shell. It’s not even been out a week, and there are already many interesting hacking initiatives for the Apple TV. Here are the top three so far.

Bigger hard drive. Since all the content to the Apple TV is streamed, I’m not quite sure how a bigger HD would benefit it — unless you’d be planning to leave all your media in it once for all.
Check out AppleTV Hacks’ guide in how to achieve this.

Format war. The Apple TV will only accept videos coded in a specific way, much like your iPod does — but someone’s figured a way to fix this. Remember Perian, the last QuickTime component you’ll ever need? Since the Apple TV also runs QuickTime, it was quite logical to think you could install it, too — albeit, achieving it is harder than you’d expect.
Check out Something Awful’s thread for how they did it.

Turn a Mac into an Apple TV? Yes, someone managed to get a bootable copy of the Apple TV’s OS, which many know to be a slim variant of Mac OS X. But as to how it is progressing, no one has been able to get past the initial Apple logo when attempting to run it in an Intel Mac, so far. My guess is that they’ll have to come up with some sort of hack or installer for it to work properly, but it doesn’t sound too farfetched.
