AirPort Extreme gets even with Time Capsule via update

If you were disappointed that Apple limited wireless Time Machine backups only to the recently-released Time Capsule, even though they advertised the feature compatible with the AirPort in some pre-Leopard statements, you can smile once again — Apple has made it right, and released the Time Machine and AirPort Updates v1.0. This update finally allows for Time Machine to detect any USB hard drives connected to your AirPort Extreme without the need of hacks. I’ve just tested this update, and can confirm that it does add the Time Machine compatibility. Good news, indeed, for users who already have the AirPort Extreme. Just make sure that the USB HD is formatted as HFS+ with journaling enabled, and enjoy the wireless backups without the need of a Time Capsule. By the way, Time Capsule owners, this update also has some fixes for you.

Sorry, I don’t have one handy to try it out. My guess would be that it doesn’t work. Maybe you could try your luck in Apple’s support boards.

Confirmed: the only who support disk sharing are the newer AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule. Not even the new AirPort Express does it.
